Bombers Shut Out Aces 10-0

The Brazos Valley Bombers have now entered the final stretch of the 2012 regular season after the dominating win last night in The Woodlands, the Bombers played the Alexandria Aces tonight at American Momentum Bank Ballpark. The Bombers kept the rhythm from last night as they pounded the Aces 10-0 in front of the home crowd.

The Bombers offense scored two runs in the second inning to start the scoring. In the inning, First baseman, Brad Porras hit a double to right center. Shortstop Nick Smelser dropped down a bunt that moved Porras to third while Smelser was safe at first. Catcher Matt Smith came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly that scored Porras. A few batters later, Center fielder Chris Florack would line an RBI single to center that scored Smelser. The Bombers would go on to score two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Third baseman Brennyn Smith hit a single to center in the fifth inning, and then came home when Porras would send a pitch over the left field wall for a two run homerun. Right fielder Kevin Knapp would lead off the sixth inning with a single to right field. Second baseman Corey Toups would come to the plate and line a single to left field. Knapp would come to the plate and score on an Aces error. Florack would come to the plate and line a single that scored Toups to complete the scoring for the inning. The Bombers would score four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the win. At the top of the inning, Florack would swing and miss on a pitch, but the pitch got away from the catcher which let Florack move to first. Florack would score the first run of the inning when James Wharton would line a pitch down the left field line for an RBI double. Brennyn Smith would come to the plate next and hit a grounder to the Aces shortstop, but the throw was off line and allowed Wharton to score and move Smith up to second. Left fielder Brandon Wood would rip a double that scored Smith for the third run of the inning. The final run of the night came from a RBI single to center off the bat of Porras that allowed Wood to come home. Kevin Knapp was named the H&R Block Never Settle For Less Player of the Game after going 3-4 with two stolen bases.

Brad Vachon started on the mound tonight for the Bombers. Vachon pitched six complete innings allowing just three hits while striking out six batters. A trio of Bombers, Franco Pace, Logan Burch and Nick Johnson came in to pitch an inning each to hold the Aces scoreless and preserve the victory.

The Bombers played very well defensively tonight to help the pitching staff. In the fourth inning, Brennyn Smith got it started by making a nice diving play to stop a ball then make the throw from his knees over to Brad Porras at first to the out. A few innings later, Corey Toups made a nice play on a chopper to second and made a strong throw to Wharton for the out at first. In the seventh inning, Nick Smelser fielding a ground ball then stepped on second for one out before firing to first for a double play. With one out in the night, Toups fielded a grounder and then started a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

The Bombers now head to Kilgore for two important games with the Pump Jacks. Both the games tomorrow and Wednesday are scheduled for 7:05 starts. The Bombers return home to close out the 2012 regular season this coming Thursday against The Woodlands Strykers. The game is a Thirsty Thursday with $1 Beer and Soft Drinks brought to you by Western Beverages! The night is also the last bobble giveaway of the season. A Gabe Bock w/TEXAGS will be given away thanks to the Physicians Centre Hospital!
